What real cases of online extortion have been reported and how did they end? We live in a digital age where data can easily fall into the wrong hands, and I'm hearing more and more stories of online blackmail. It could be hacking into personal accounts, fake compromising videos, demanding a ransom for “lost” data. I would like to understand how real it is to suffer from such crimes and what have been some high-profile cases. Maybe some of you have encountered something like this personally or heard first hand stories?

There was a high-profile case in 2021 when hackers broke into the database of a major dating service and started sending threats to users en masse. Some people succumbed to the blackmail, but many went to the police and the investigation led to the arrest of the criminals. Another scheme is deepfake blackmail, when scammers create fake videos of the victim's face. This happened to a famous businessman who was accused of a scandal, but later it turned out that the video was faked. To avoid such situations, it is important to observe cyber-hygiene: do not share personal information, use two-factor authentication and pay close attention to unfamiliar messages. If you are suddenly blackmailed, the main thing is not to panic and do not transfer money. It is better to immediately contact the police and record all the evidence. By the way, I recently came across an interesting article https://www.myvipon.com/post/1490502/join-as-seller.php, which discusses security issues on the Internet. Perhaps there you can find additional tips on protecting your data.

Fortunately, I have not encountered such situations, but I have heard that they do happen. I think the main thing is not to panic or make hasty decisions if you find yourself in such a situation. It is better to immediately consult someone knowledgeable or ask for help. In general, caution on the Internet certainly does not hurt!

These stories are seriously eye-opening. Online extortion is becoming more common, and the use of deepfakes just makes it scarier. I totally agree that staying calm and not giving in to demands is key. Also, keeping a record of everything and going for police clearance can help when filing a report or proving your innocence in any false claim. Cyber-hygiene and awareness really are the first lines of defense. Thanks for the insights and that article link!
